J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0 6 nebraska cpas PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY JONI SUNDQUIST, NEBRASKA SOCIETY OF CPAS SOCIETY BOARD DISCUSSES BUDGET, HIGH SCHOOL ACCOUNTING, LEGISLATION, AND MORE The Society Executive Committee and Board of Directors held their first meetings of 2020 on January 7, with Chairman Shari A. Munro presiding. The meetings took place at the Nebraska Club in Lincoln, shortly before the Society’s Annual State Senators’ Reception and Dinner. During the meeting, the board reviewed the approximately $1.26 million preliminary society budget for 2020–2021, which includes the development of a newwebsite. There will be no increase in dues this coming year. The Society’s Executive Committee will review the final version of the budget in late March before the Society’s new fiscal year, which begins April 1, 2020. In anticipation of the new fiscal year, member profiles and CPE transcripts have been either emailed or mailed to all members; member dues statements will be emailed or mailed before April 1. The following includes a list of further items discussed and actions taken at the January 7 meetings of the Society Executive Committee and Board: • Approved eight Society membership applications. • Approved the Society’s financial statements as of November 30, 2019. • Received a report from Society Vice President Kelly Ebert regarding the Society’s 2019 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programs; 112 courses and conferences were held with a total of 2,711 registrants—a slight uptick in the number of registrants over 2018. • Approved Zelle HR Solutions of Lincoln as a new trusted Business Solution Provider in the Society’s Member Benefits Program. Zelle HR can provide your firm or business with human resources consulting services, including a review of HR processes and procedures, organizational planning and development, and employee relations support. • Approved new pricing strategies for the Society’s Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses and conferences that will remove administrative burdens while continuing to provide value to members. Members will be able to take advantage of the new “Early Bird Pricing,” which will replace discount coupons and late fees. • Approvedmoving the Society’s 2020 Annual Meeting and Fall CPEConference to Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30, at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in La Vista. • Approved the recommendations of the awards selection committee to honor four outstanding Society members during the 2020 Annual Meeting. • Scheduled the Society’s open house for Wednesday, June 3, from 5:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to showcase the Society’s new offices at 7435 O Street, Suite 100, in Lincoln. • Announced the promotion of the AICPA’s APBP North- Central Regional Conference near Des Moines, Iowa, to provide higher-order accounting curriculum training to area high school accounting teachers. The AICPA’s Accounting Program for Building the Profession (APBP) offers three days of teacher training to help them do an even better job of inspiring the next generation of CPAs. Read more at https://www.startheregoplaces.com/teacher/ apbp-advanced-accounting. • Announced Governor Pete Ricketts’ selection of Melissa Ruff of Deloitte to fill the vacancy for a licensed CPA from Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District on the Nebraska Board of Public Accountancy. The Society Board had approved the nomination of Ruff in November 2019. Also, during the Society Board meeting, lobbyists Walt Radcliffe, Justin Brady, and Korby Gilbertson, of Radcliffe, Gilbertson & Brady, led a discussion regarding potential legislative bills and issues of interest to the profession.
