During the event, we learned that accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll clerks as well as accountants and auditors, are among the top 10 declining jobs while data analysts, artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists, and other digital and technology specialists are among the top 10 emerging roles. The goal of the CPA Evolution initiative is to ensure that the CPA profession remains relevant in the future. Future of the Profession Panel Held at UNL In conjunction with the CPA Evolution project, the Society sponsored a Future of the Profession panel discussion organized by the Nebraska Board of Public Accountancy onMay 22 at Hawks Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business. Dr. Aaron Crabtree of UNL moderated the panel, which consisted of Society Board member & Treasurer David Swan of SP Group, PC, along with National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) Vice President Dan Dustin, State Board member and former Society Board member Michele Stromp of KPMG LLP, State Board member and former Society Board member Marcy Luth of Almquist, Maltzahn, Galloway & Luth, PC, and State Board member and Society Past Chairman Dr. Thomas Purcell of Creighton University. Excellent Attendance at Summer Conferences The Society’s two summer conferences, the 23rd annual Not-for- Profit Organizations Conference and the 38th annual Nebraska Governmental Accounting & Auditing Conference, drew nearly 190 registrants and 20-plus local and national speakers. The conferences were held June 19-21 at The Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln. Road Tripping: Scottsbluff, Alliance, Kearney, North Platte & Beyond John Sherrick of Surgent presented two courses at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Scottsbluff in June: The Best S Corporation, Limited Liability & Partnership Update was held June 6 and Compilations, Reviews & Preparations: Engagement Performance & Annual Update was held June 7. Approximately 20 CPAs attended these courses each day from the area—Alliance, Chadron, Gering, Mitchell, Ogallala, Scottsbluff & Sidney. Vice President Kelly Ebert and I enjoyed our 10 stops along the way, visiting with additional member CPAs from Aurora, Cozad, Ogallala, and York. The following week, I enjoyed visiting 10 member CPAs in Kearney and 11 in North Platte. It was a pleasure meeting members in their communities. On the flipside, all members are welcome to stop by the Society office to say hello whenever you are in Lincoln! Young Professionals Begin to Organize Earlier this summer, a small group of CPAs met to discuss the formation of a Young Professionals Group. This is in the initial stages but we are hoping to develop an active group of young CPAs through this initiative. Next on the Agenda The Society’s Nominating Committee will be meeting in late July to recommend two new directors to serve on the Society Board as well as the chairman-elect for 2020-2021. Those individuals will be voted upon by the membership at the Annual Meeting, which will occur during the Fall CPE Conference, November 4-5, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in La Vista, Neb. The Society’s annual Board Retreat will be August 23 at the Ashland Country Club. AICPA Board member Dan Griffiths, CPA, CGMA of Salt Lake City-based Tanner LLC will join us in the morning for a national report, followed by Nebraska Board of Public Accountancy Executive Director Dan Sweetwood with a State Board report. Then Society lobbyist Walt Radcliffe and his team will provide a legislative update to the group. Members of the Society’s Legislation Committee and Taxation Committee are also invited to participate in the legislative portion of the retreat this year. Husker CPAs Tailgate Scheduled The Cornhuskers will be taking on the Indiana Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on October 26. You won’t want to miss the Husker CPAs Tailgate before the game. This fun event will raise dollars to help support the best and brightest college accounting students in Nebraska through the Nebraska Society of CPAs’ Foundation.
